Digital Rights and Responsibilities (quest 4.1.1)

Digital Learning Communities need a solid strategic plan for an acceptable use policy, so that students, parents, and teachers will know what is appropriate and inappropriate behavior on the intranet or Internet.  It is also important because there needs to be an established protection against any impeding liability that may hinder the progress of an online digital learning community.   The best way to establish and maintain a flourishing DLC where citizens understand, observe, are inclined to willingly support, and ultimately benefit from Digital Rights and Responsibilities is by starting a session or class with a very in depth understanding of what is expected of them as they are using the web.  Not only should the digital citizen read the policy, they should also sign off on the policy showing that they understand the policy.  It would also be beneficial if they take some type of quiz to prove that they mastered the understanding of the policy.

I have attached what I feel to be a very solid plan that Dekalb County Schools created in 2000. This plan can be used as a template for future plans for supporting and protecting a Digital Learning Community through Digital Rights and Responsibilities.

Last, I have a video explaining the components of this plan below.
